SYNOPSIS

A young Bomber Command air crew deal with friendship, loss, and paralysing fear as British and allied forces prepare for the invasion of France in June 1944.

Set in and around an RAF Bomber Command Airbase on the east coast of England in 1943/4, and more often than not in Lancaster Bomber C for Charlie, itself. A youthful seven man bomber aircrew, prepare for a maximum-effort raid deep over the heart of Nazi Germany’s industrial complex.

The expectation is that this will become yet another long, hard and deadly, but hopefully decisive raid, as Bomber Command strives for air superiority during the build-up to the rumoured and impending allied invasion of Nazi occupied France. The stakes are therefore already extremely high, so when Barton, the young, overprotective and often unpredictable mid-upper gunner on this crew of unsung heroes learns that the others want him out, chaos ensues as his inner demons are laid bare for all to see.

PRE-PRODUCTION

Autumn 2019: Two friends in a rented half-barn, sit atop a huge stack of palettes, reclaimed wood, and scrapyard junk, with a dream and a plan to make a movie. A WW2 Bomber Command movie..

Jamie had drawn up some build plans for a full scale replica Lancaster Bomber interior set. And Luke had a sketchpad full of storyboards, visuals and a roughed out script. So they set to work. Luke developing the script and storyboards, and fleshing out the world. While Jamie set about building the Lanc’ set to shoot their movie in.

They estimated a six month project before shooting could begin. Fast forward almost THREE YEARS.. To that roasting hot July of 2022, and they had a full and complete super realistic Lancaster Bomber film-set, a harrowing, eye-watering screenplay and script, and a series of striking storyboards blu-tacked to the barn wall alongside the plane. They had a wardrobe full of costumes and bomber kit. Reams of props, practical models, film equipment and lights. And an incredible cast of young actors excitedly climbing in and out of turrets and scrambling around the Bomber set. While a film-crew, eager to exploit the years of work laid down before them, lurked around in the shadows...

PRODUCTION

Filmed in blocks over a 39 month period. Starting in July 2022 in the Bomber set in East Sussex & ending in October 2025 at East Kirkby Airbase in Lincs..

The July 22 shoot came round a bit too fast for Jamie. The set was still not complete after storm Eunice shredded the barn in Feb 22, pushing the build back by several months.. click here for the video. Jamie was still working on the free-standing Mid Upper Turret when shooting began, but managed to complete it in time for the turret scenes. "It was an emotional experience" remarks Jamie. "Seeing the set I'd toiled over for 3 hard years, suddenly brought to life by our amazing cast. It regularly brought me to tears." The repeated mantra "build it and they will come" finally bearing fruit. This initial opening shoot was followed by their first location shoot at Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (East Kirkby Airbase) in Oct 22.

Then the big one. Back in the Lanc set in May 23. This time things were really starting to happen. An incredible shoot. With mature performances, from a cast really getting under the skin of their characters. With costumes, kit, set, props, cast and crew really coming together to sell the story. These 3 shoots were followed by 2 more in July 23 and March 24 within the plane and freestanding Mid Upper Turret, while post production was now well underway. Then the big pub shoot and exterior location shoot in May 24. Followed by many many pick-ups and stabs up until Aug 25. Which saw an awesome filming expedition to an Atlantic Wall location in the Netherlands, followed swiftly by another series of pick-ups in and around the Lanc (now shelved in sections up in the rafters of the barn next door). And then, the grand finale at East Kirkby Airbase in Sept 25, with a glorious team of 80 re-enactors, supporting actors, main cast and a whole host of period vehicles. The perfect wrap to an insanely ambitious production.

OF THE 125,000 AIRMEN THAT FLEW WITHIN BOMBER COMMAND DURING WWII, 55,573 OF THEM WERE KILLED IN ACTION, 8,403 WERE SERIOUSLY WOUNDED AND 9,838 WERE TAKEN PRISONER.THIS FILM IS DEDICATED TO THOSE 125,000 SOULS, THEIR FAMILIES, AND THE COUNTLESS OTHERS AFFECTED ACROSS EUROPE AND THE WORLD BY THE HORRORS OF THE BOMBING CAMPAIGN.LEST WE FORGET...
